🌀 Religion at the Edge of Collapse: Regressive or Revolutionary?
Christianity vs Eastern spirituality, differentiating divine calling from the egoic mind, moving from propositional to participatory knowing, and what religious traditions afford in a time of collapse
Jordan Hall is a tech entrepreneur and philosopher who, over a year ago, shocked the liminal web by announcing his conversion to Christianity.
My first thought was: what compels a deep meta-systemic thinker to step into a religious faith?
The old me would have dismissed this as a form of regression, a grasping for certainty in an increasingly complex world.
Yet my impression of Jordan, both from spending dozens of hours listening to him and interacting with those who have met him in person, is that he is a man of deep integrity.
While people's religious impulses often become constrained by dogmatic beliefs, I've learned that religiosity at its core is about opening to mystery rather than clinging to what is known.
Over the years, thousands of us have trusted Jordan's perspective on a wide range of topics—from collective intelligence and civilizational design to technology and the meta-crisis.
I figured exploring Jordan's conversion could offer insight into the positive role religious traditions can play in times of deep fragmentation and disconnect.
This intuition blossomed into a beautiful dialogue and Q&A session recorded live during Limicon, a digital conference for those in the Liminal, Metamodern, and Game B spaces.
In our conversation, we explored Jordan's early experiences with religion and spirituality, what ultimately drew him to Christianity, and what Christianity might afford that Eastern traditions do not.
We discussed how to discern divine calling from the egoic mind, confronting fundamentalist forms of Christianity, and the shift from propositional to participatory forms of knowing.
We also examined the role religion may play in ameliorating negative societal trends and addressing the meta-crisis at large.
